In this lesson, we’ll take our Scratch Jr. skills a step further! We’ll start by reviewing what we’ve learned so far, then explore how to add a second character to our projects. Our challenge will be to make two characters walk together, learning a new trick for advanced coding along the way. We’ll finish with some free play time to get creative and try out new ideas. Let’s get started!
Read through the Scratch the Cat Slideshow with your class.
The slideshow will remind students how to add motion blocks, change backgrounds and set up today's lesson, adding new characters!
Show students how to choose and add a new character from the character library. Pick a character that could go on a walk with their first one. Let students add their own second character too.
Explain that when we have two characters, we need to give each one its own set of instructions.
This means clicking on each character and adding a separate set of blocks for their actions.
Demonstrate how to switch between characters.
Students can see which character they are controlling by checking which name is highlighted on the left hand side of the screen!
Select one character and add movement blocks (like "move forward" or "hop").
Then, switch to the second character and add different movement blocks.
Point out how each character has its own code that makes it unique.
