Privacy Policy
Your privacy is important to us. It is Coding Ireland's policy to respect your privacy regarding any information we may collect from you across our website, https://www.codingireland.ie, and other sites we own and operate.
Information we collect
Log data
When you visit our website, our servers may automatically log the standard data provided by your web browser. This data is considered “non-identifying information”, as it does not personally identify you on its own. It may include your computer’s Internet Protocol (IP) address, your browser type and version, the pages you visit, the time and date of your visit, the time spent on each page, and other details.
We may also collect data about the device you are using to access our website. This data may include the device type, operating system, unique device identifiers, device settings, and geo-location data. What we collect can depend on the individual settings of your device and software. We recommend checking the policies of your device manufacturer or software provider to learn what information they make available to us.
Personal information
Coding Ireland is an online learning platform used by schools, teachers, parents and learners. The personal information we hold depends on who you are and how you came to use the platform. We only request information relevant to providing the service, and only use it to provide or improve that service.
For all account holders we may hold: your name, email address, phone number, password, and your account preferences.
For teachers and other adult account holders we may additionally hold: postal or work address, teacher reference number, the school you belong to, and payment details (handled by our payment processor).
For learners (including children) we may hold: name, a username, a parent or guardian email address, the school and class the learner belongs to, and the learner’s activity on the platform. We do not store a child’s date of birth; the age range comes only from the class their teacher places them in, so we can show age-appropriate content.
Learning records. As learners use the platform we record their progress through lessons, points awarded, quiz and assessment results, and any feedback a learner gives on a lesson. We also keep information that helps a learner’s teacher see how they are getting on, such as how much of a lesson they have completed and how they did on quizzes.
School information. For schools that use the platform we hold school details such as the roll number, name, address and type of school.
Teacher professional learning. Where teachers take part in our continuing professional development (CPD) courses, we may hold the written responses, reflections, plans, survey answers, peer feedback and facilitator comments that make up their professional learning portfolio.
Legal basis for processing
We rely on the following legal bases under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):
- Performance of a contract – to create and run your account and provide the service you (or your school) signed up for.
- Legitimate interests – to secure, maintain and improve the platform, provided your rights do not override those interests.
- Legal obligation – where we are required by law to process or retain information.
- Consent – for any optional uses we ask you to opt in to, such as optional marketing. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- On the instructions of a school – where a school enrols its pupils, we process pupil data on that school’s documented instructions (see “Who controls your data”).
Who controls your data (schools, teachers and parents)
How responsibility is shared depends on how an account was created:
- Pupils enrolled by a school (for example using a class code): the school is the data controller and decides how its pupils’ data is used. Coding Ireland acts as a data processor, handling that data only on the school’s instructions under a data processing agreement. Parents should direct requests about a school-enrolled pupil’s data to the school in the first instance; we will support the school in responding.
- Accounts you create yourself (for example an individual teacher or a parent): Coding Ireland is the data controller and is directly responsible for your data.
How we collect information
We collect information by fair and lawful means, with your knowledge and consent. We also let you know why we’re collecting it and how it will be used. You are free to refuse our request for this information, with the understanding that we may be unable to provide you with some of your desired services without it.
Use of information
We may use a combination of identifying and non-identifying information to understand who our visitors are, how they use our services, and how we may improve their experience of our website in future. We do not disclose the specifics of this information publicly, but may share aggregated and anonymised versions of this information, for example, in website and customer usage trend reports.
We may use your personal details to contact you with updates about our website and services, along with promotional content that we believe may be of interest to you. If you wish to opt out of receiving promotional content, you can follow the “unsubscribe” instructions provided alongside any promotional correspondence from us.
Data processing and storage
The personal information we collect is stored and processed in Ireland, or where we or our partners, affiliates and third-party providers maintain facilities. We only transfer data within jurisdictions subject to data protection laws that reflect our commitment to protecting the privacy of our users.
We only retain personal information for as long as necessary to provide a service, or to improve our services in future. While we retain this data, we will protect it within commercially acceptable means to prevent loss and theft, as well as unauthorised access, disclosure, copying, use or modification. That said, we advise that no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and cannot guarantee absolute data security.
How long we keep your data
We keep personal information no longer than necessary for the purposes described in this policy, and in line with our retention practices and any instructions from a learner’s school. Payment records are kept for 6 years, as required by Irish tax and accounting law. Teachers can download or delete their professional learning portfolio at any time, and you can ask us to delete information we no longer need.
If you request your personal information be deleted, or where your personal information becomes no longer relevant to our operations, we will erase it from our system within a reasonable timeframe.
Cookie Policy
We use “cookies” to collect information about you and your activity across our site. A cookie is a small piece of data that our website stores on your computer, and accesses each time you visit, so we can understand how you use our site. This helps us serve you content based on preferences you have specified. Please refer to our Cookie Policy for more information.
Third-party access to information
We use third-party services for:
- Analytics tracking
- Payment processing
- Advertising and campaign measurement (Meta and X/Twitter) – on our public marketing pages only, never in the learning area used by pupils
These services may access our data solely for the purpose of performing specific tasks on our behalf. We do not share any personally identifying information with them without your explicit consent. We do not give them permission to disclose or use any of our data for any other purpose.
We may, from time to time, allow limited access to our data by external consultants and agencies for the purpose of analysis and service improvement. This access is only permitted for as long as necessary to perform a specific function. We only work with external agencies whose privacy policies align with ours.
We will refuse government and law enforcement requests for data if we believe a request is too broad or unrelated to its stated purpose. However, we may cooperate if we believe the requested information is necessary and appropriate to comply with legal process, to protect our own rights and property, to protect the safety of the public and any person, to prevent a crime, or to prevent what we reasonably believe to be illegal, legally actionable, or unethical activity.
We do not otherwise share or supply personal information to third parties. We do not sell or rent your personal information to marketers or third parties.
Children’s Privacy
We are committed to protecting the privacy of children who use our services. We encourage parents to engage with us in protecting their children’s privacy, ensuring a safe and enjoyable online experience. Please refer to our Children’s Privacy Policy for more information.
Limits of our policy
This privacy policy only covers Coding Ireland's own collecting and handling of data. We only work with partners, affiliates and third-party providers whose privacy policies align with ours, however we cannot accept responsibility or liability for their respective privacy practices.
Our website may link to external sites that are not operated by us. Please be aware that we have no control over the content and policies of those sites, and cannot accept responsibility or liability for their respective privacy practices.
Changes to this policy
At our discretion, we may change our privacy policy to reflect current acceptable practices. We will take reasonable steps to let users know about changes via our website. Your continued use of this site after any changes to this policy will be regarded as acceptance of our practices around privacy and personal information.
Automated processing
Some information that helps teachers see how a learner is getting on is produced automatically from the learner’s activity. It is there to support the learner’s teacher and school; it is not used to make any decision that has a legal or similarly significant effect on a learner without a person involved. You have the right to object to this kind of automated processing and to ask that decisions about you are not based on it alone.
Improving our services
We may use aggregated, anonymised information about how the platform is used to improve our services. We do not sell your data, and for accounts you create yourself you can opt out by contacting us, without losing access to the service.
Data breaches
If a personal data breach occurs that is likely to result in a risk to your rights and freedoms, we will notify the Data Protection Commission within 72 hours of becoming aware of it where required, and will inform affected users without undue delay where the breach is likely to result in a high risk to them.
Your rights and responsibilities
As our user, you have the right to be informed about how your data is collected and used. Under the GDPR you are entitled to access the data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability. You may amend your account information at any time using the tools in your account control panel, and you can make any other request, including a subject access request, by contacting our Data Protection contact below; we will respond within one month.
You are entitled to restrict or object to our use of your data, while retaining the right to use your personal information for your own purposes. You have the right to opt out of data about you being used in decisions based solely on automated processing.
If you are not satisfied with how we handle your data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Irish Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie). For pupils enrolled by a school, please raise concerns with the school as data controller in the first instance.
Feel free to contact us if you have any concerns or questions about how we handle your data and personal information.

Cookie Policy
We use cookies to help improve your experience of https://www.codingireland.ie. This cookie policy is part of Coding Ireland's privacy policy, and covers the use of cookies between your device and our site. We also provide basic information on third-party services we may use, who may also use cookies as part of their service, though they are not covered by our policy.
If you don’t wish to accept cookies from us, you should instruct your browser to refuse cookies from https://www.codingireland.ie, with the understanding that we may be unable to provide you with some of your desired content and services.
What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small piece of data that a website stores on your device when you visit, typically containing information about the website itself, a unique identifier that allows the site to recognise your web browser when you return, additional data that serves the purpose of the cookie, and the lifespan of the cookie itself.
Cookies are used to enable certain features (eg. logging in), to track site usage (eg. analytics), to store your user settings (eg. timezone, notification preferences), and to personalise your content (eg. advertising, language).
Cookies set by the website you are visiting are normally referred to as “first-party cookies”, and typically only track your activity on that particular site. Cookies set by other sites and companies (ie. third parties) are called “third-party cookies”, and can be used to track you on other websites that use the same third-party service.
Types of cookies and how we use them
Essential cookies
Essential cookies are crucial to your experience of a website, enabling core features like user logins, account management, shopping carts and payment processing. We use essential cookies to enable certain functions on our website.
Performance cookies
Performance cookies are used in the tracking of how you use a website during your visit, without collecting personal information about you. Typically, this information is anonymous and aggregated with information tracked across all site users, to help companies understand visitor usage patterns, identify and diagnose problems or errors their users may encounter, and make better strategic decisions in improving their audience’s overall website experience. These cookies may be set by the website you’re visiting (first-party) or by third-party services. We use performance cookies on our site.
Functionality cookies
Functionality cookies are used in collecting information about your device and any settings you may configure on the website you’re visiting (like language and timezone settings). With this information, websites can provide you with customised, enhanced or optimised content and services. These cookies may be set by the website you’re visiting (first-party) or by third-party service. We do not use this type of cookie on our site.
Targeting/advertising cookies
Targeting/advertising cookies are used in determining what promotional content is more relevant and appropriate to you and your interests. Websites may use them to deliver targeted advertising or to limit the number of times you see an advertisement. This helps companies improve the effectiveness of their campaigns and the quality of content presented to you. These cookies may be set by the website you’re visiting (first-party) or by third-party services. Targeting/advertising cookies set by third-parties may be used to track you on other websites that use the same third-party service. We use a limited number of advertising/measurement cookies (from Meta and X/Twitter) only on our public marketing pages – to measure our advertising and reach new audiences. We do not use advertising cookies in the learning area used by pupils and teachers.
Third-party cookies on our site
We may employ third-party companies and individuals on our websites—for example, analytics providers and content partners. We grant these third parties access to selected information to perform specific tasks on our behalf. They may also set third-party cookies in order to deliver the services they are providing. Third-party cookies can be used to track you on other websites that use the same third-party service. As we have no control over third-party cookies, they are not covered by Coding Ireland's cookie policy.
Our third-party privacy promise
We review the privacy policies of all our third-party providers before enlisting their services to ensure their practices align with ours. We will never knowingly include third-party services that compromise or violate the privacy of our users.
How you can control or opt out of cookies
If you do not wish to accept cookies from us, you can instruct your browser to refuse cookies from our website. Most browsers are configured to accept cookies by default, but you can update these settings to either refuse cookies altogether, or to notify you when a website is trying to set or update a cookie.
If you browse websites from multiple devices, you may need to update your settings on each individual device.
Although some cookies can be blocked with little impact on your experience of a website, blocking all cookies may mean you are unable to access certain features and content across the sites you visit.
Children's Privacy Policy
We are committed to protecting the privacy of children who use https://www.codingireland.ie and its services. This children’s privacy policy explains how we handle children’s data under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Irish Data Protection Act 2018. In Ireland, the digital age of consent is 16: a child under 16 cannot give valid consent to the processing of their personal data for an online service on their own, so consent must come from a parent or guardian, or – in a school setting – the processing is carried out on the instructions and under the responsibility of the school.
Most children use the platform through their school
The great majority of children use Coding Ireland because their school has enrolled them, for example with a class code. In that case the school is the data controller: the school decides what data is processed and is responsible, under its own data-protection and child-safeguarding obligations (including Children First), for informing parents and obtaining any consent required. Coding Ireland acts as the school’s data processor and uses the child’s data only to deliver the service on the school’s instructions. If you are a parent or guardian of a school-enrolled pupil, please direct questions or requests about your child’s data to the school in the first instance; we will support the school in responding.
Children who are not enrolled by a school
Where a child under 16 would otherwise sign up directly (outside a school), we require the consent of a parent or guardian before collecting the child’s personal information, and we will make reasonable efforts to verify that consent. We collect only what is needed to provide the service, and we do not require a child to provide more information than is necessary to take part in an activity.
What we collect from children
For a child learner we may hold a name and username, a parent or guardian email, the school and class they belong to, and their learning activity on the platform (such as their progress and how they did on quizzes). We do not store a child’s date of birth. We do not use children’s contact details for marketing, and we do not send marketing to children.
Safeguarding children’s privacy
We take security seriously and protect children’s personal information within commercially acceptable means against loss, theft, and unauthorised access, disclosure, copying, use or modification. That said, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute data security. This policy does not replace a school’s own child-protection and safeguarding policy; it sits alongside it.
Information abuse and community misconduct
We do not tolerate the publishing of private or personal information about an individual without their consent, cyberbullying, or other forms of information abuse on https://www.codingireland.ie. If we discover that a child’s personal information has been disclosed on our site without consent, we will remove it as quickly as possible and take appropriate action (a warning, suspension or ban) on the offending account.
Third-party access to information
We do not knowingly disclose children’s personal information to third parties for their own purposes. We use a limited number of service providers (for example to host the platform) who act only on our instructions, and we do not allow children’s personal data to be used for third-party advertising.
Parental rights and how to exercise them
Parents and guardians have the right to access, correct or delete their child’s personal information, to object to or restrict its processing, and to withdraw consent. For a school-enrolled pupil, please raise these requests with the school as data controller; the school will direct us as needed. For a child who is not enrolled through a school, you may log in to your child’s account to review or amend the information, or contact us at info@codingireland.ie to request its removal. You also have the right to complain to the Irish Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie).
Please be aware that the removal of certain information may result in the termination of the associated account, or withdrawal from the associated activity.
