1 - Welcome to Toy Time
Bonjour! Do you have a favourite toy? Maybe a teddy bear you sleep with, or a yo-yo you can do tricks with? Today we're going to learn how to talk about toys in French - perfect for when you visit a French toy shop or play with French-speaking friends!
In France, children love the same toys we do, but they have different names for them. Some toys are 'le' (masculine) and some are 'la' (feminine) - we'll spot the difference as we learn.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 popular toys in French
- Spot which toys are 'le' and which are 'la'
- Listen to French children talking about their toys
2 - Meet the Toys
Here are today's new French toy words. Click each one to hear the pronunciation, then say it yourself! Notice how some toys use 'le' (masculine) and some use 'la' (feminine). Can you spot the pattern?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet

3 - Toy Shop Listening
Listen to two French children talking in a toy shop. They'll describe different toys they're looking at. Answer the questions by clicking the correct picture each time!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Listen & Answer activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students listen to audio and answer comprehension questions. They can replay audio as needed.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Play audio to the whole class, then discuss answers together. Replay tricky sections.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Label the Toys
Look carefully at each toy picture and click the correct French label! There are four choices for each picture - choose wisely and listen to check your pronunciation.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Class Matching Worksheet
Your teacher will hand out worksheets. Draw lines to match each English toy name with its French translation. Use the pictures to help you remember!

- Print copies of this worksheet for your students before the lesson.
- Worksheets can be done during class time or for homework.
- Distribute one copy per student (or pair for collaborative work).
