Illustration for Formal and Informal GreetingsIn German, how you greet someone depends on who they are and how well you know them. There are two main types: formal greetings for adults, teachers, or people you don't know well, and informal greetings for friends and people your age.

    Formal Greetings:

    • Guten Morgen - Good morning / Good day (use this most of the time for formal situations).
    • Guten Abend - Good evening (use after about 5pm).
    • Wie geht es Ihnen? - How are you? (formal way).
    • Wie heiรŸen Sie? - What's your name? (formal).

    Informal Greetings:

    • Hallo - Hi / Bye (like 'hi' to friends).
    • Wie geht es dir? - How's it going? (casual way to ask how someone is).
    • Wie heiรŸt du? - What's your name? (informal).
Remember: Use formal greetings to show respect to adults or strangers. Save informal ones for your friends. Practice switching between them to sound natural!
