    1 - Introduction

Welcome to our unplugged activity lesson! Today, we will be playing fun games that will help us understand how to follow and give instructions. We will start with a game of Simon Says, then move on to a Grid Game where we will guide characters on a grid. Lastly, we will work on a 'Giving Directions' worksheet where we will guide a bird to its fruit. Are you ready to have some fun while learning? Let's get started!

    2 - Simon Says

Explain to the students that they will play a game of Simon Says to practice following instructions.

Remind students that they should only follow a command if it starts with "Simon says." (You can choose to make this game knockout style or just for fun).

Play a few rounds, starting with simple commands like "Simon says touch your nose" or "Simon says jump." (Check the teacher notes for more Simon Says commands)

Observe and ensure students understand the importance of listening to and following commands.

    3 - Grid Game (Beginner)

Now introduce the grid game to your students.

This game will involve guiding characters around a grid on the interactive whiteboard. The students will give instructions to move the characters to specific locations on the grid.

Display the grid with colored squares on the whiteboard. Choose a starting point for the character and ask the students to guide the character to a specific colored square.

Have the students give clear, step-by-step instructions, such as "Move forward two steps" or "Turn left and move one step."

Once the students are comfortable with the colored version, introduce the more advanced version of the game in the next step!

    4 - Grid Game (Advanced)

    5 - Giving Directions Worksheet

Download and distribute the 'Giving Directions' Worksheet. ➡️

Tell the students that they will now work on a worksheet similar to the game they played on the whiteboard. The goal is to guide a bird to reach the fruit on a grid by giving it the correct instructions.

There are two ways that you can have students complete this worksheet:

  • Option 1: They can cut out the arrow pieces provided on the worksheet and stick them onto the grid in the correct sequence to guide the bird to the fruit.
  • Option 2: They can draw or write the arrows directly onto the grid to show the path the bird should take.
