1 - Welcome to the Vegetable Garden
Imagine you're at a Spanish market with colourful stalls full of fresh vegetables. Today we're going to learn the Spanish names for 8 vegetables you might see there - from crunchy carrots to leafy lettuce!
Spain grows amazing vegetables, just like we do in Ireland with our potatoes and cabbage. You'll learn to recognise them when you hear descriptions and even practise asking about them with a partner.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Identify 8 vegetables in Spanish
- Understand simple descriptions of vegetables
- Use vegetables in conversations
2 - Meet the Vegetables
Here are today's new Spanish vegetable words. Click each one to hear how it's pronounced, then say it yourself. Notice some look similar to English - these are helpful cognates like 'la zanahoria' and 'el brócoli'!
Listen for 'el' (masculine) and 'la' (feminine) - Spanish vegetables have genders just like fruits. Most are feminine like 'la tomate', but broccoli is 'el brócoli'.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet

3 - Flashcard Flips
See the English word first and try saying the Spanish vegetable before flipping the card. Great for building quick recall - just like turning soil in a garden to find hidden vegetables!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices

- Great for self-paced vocabulary drilling. Students can flip cards and repeat until confident.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)

- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Listen to Descriptions
Listen carefully to the conversation about vegetables at the market. Answer the comprehension questions by clicking the correct choice. This helps you understand vegetables in real conversations!
How to Use This Activity:

- Students listen to audio and answer comprehension questions. They can replay audio as needed.

5 - Class Matching Worksheet
Your teacher will hand out worksheets. Draw lines to match each Spanish vegetable to its English name and picture. Use what you've heard and seen to complete it!
