2 - Formal and Informal
In German, greetings depend on who you are speaking to, similar to using 'Hello' with a teacher or 'Hi' with a friend. This distinction is between formal and informal greetings.
- Formal greetings are polite and used with adults, strangers, teachers, or in shops. They show respect. Examples: Guten Tag (hello during the day) and Guten Abend (hello in the evening).
- Informal greetings are casual and used with friends, family, or people your age. Example: Hallo (hi or bye with friends).
You will practise these in the upcoming activities. Use formal greetings with adults and informal ones with friends.
