    3 - Spanish punctuation

    Illustration for Spanish punctuationIn Spanish, they use upside-down exclamation marks (¡) and question marks (¿) at the beginning of sentences, as well as the normal ones at the end (! and ?). For example:

    • ¡Hola! (instead of just 'Hola!')
    • ¿Cómo estás? (instead of just 'Cómo estás?')

    These marks tell you right away if a sentence is exciting or a question. Keep an eye out for them when reading Spanish – they make texts fun to spot and help with understanding!

    Practice spotting them: Look back at the words you've learned and imagine adding ¡ or ¿ where needed.
