1 - Welcome to Our Week
Have you ever wondered how to plan your week in German? Today we're learning the days of the week so you can talk about your routines, sports practice, and weekend plans auf Deutsch!
In Germany, children go to school Monday to Friday just like us, but they have fun weekend activities too. Knowing the days helps you make plans with German-speaking friends.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name all 7 days of the week in German
- Talk about your weekly routine
- Make plans using German days
2 - Days of the Week
Here are the 7 days of the week in German. Click each day to hear how it's pronounced, then say it out loud yourself!
Notice how some days sound similar to English - like 'Freitag' (Friday) and 'Samstag' (Saturday). These 'cognates' make German easier to learn!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet
Download Vocabulary Sheet (PDF)
- Print the vocabulary reference sheet for students to keep as a study aid.
- Great for homework, revision, or as a take-home reference.
- Students can use it alongside the interactive activity.
3 - Word Search Challenge
Time to hunt for the days! Find all 7 German days hidden in the letter grid. Click and drag to highlight each word as you spot it.
Tip: Some words go backwards or diagonally - look carefully! Say each day out loud when you find it to practise pronunciation.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Word Search activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students find vocabulary words hidden in a letter grid. Click and drag to highlight found words.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Display the word search on your interactive whiteboard. Have students come up to find and highlight words.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Partner Plans
Work with a partner to practise making weekly plans! Follow the conversation prompts together, taking turns as Person 1 and Person 2. Listen to the audio if you need help with pronunciation.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Partner Practice activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students practise dialogue with a partner or family member. They can click to hear each phrase before repeating.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Pair students up to practise the dialogue. Model the conversation first with a volunteer, then have pairs practise.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Spin the Day Wheel
Spin the wheel to land on a random day! Say what you do on that day in German, like 'Am Samstag, spiele ich Fußball!'
Try to use complete sentences to practise. Everyone gets a turn to spin and speak!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Spin the Wheel activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students spin the wheel and practise saying the vocabulary word that lands. Great for random selection and speaking practice.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Spin the wheel on the whiteboard and have students call out the word together. Use it to pick random students or vocabulary items.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
