1 - How Do You Feel?
Have you ever tried to tell a French friend how you're feeling? Today we're learning how to talk about emotions in French - perfect for making new friends or understanding French films and songs!
Emotions help us connect with people from different cultures. When you know these words, you can share how you're feeling whether you're 'content' after a good lunch or 'triste' about missing home.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 emotions in French
- Match French emotion words to faces
- Use emotion words in conversations
2 - French Emotion Words
Here are today's new French emotion words. Click each word to hear how it's pronounced, then try saying it yourself while looking at the picture!
Notice how some words end in -é - this often shows they're adjectives describing feelings. French adjectives usually agree in gender and number, but we'll focus on the basic masculine forms today.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet
Download Vocabulary Sheet (PDF)
- Print the vocabulary reference sheet for students to keep as a study aid.
- Great for homework, revision, or as a take-home reference.
- Students can use it alongside the interactive activity.
3 - Flashcard Challenge
Great job learning the words! Now test your memory with flashcards. You'll see an English emotion first - try saying the French word before flipping to check. The facial expressions will help you remember!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Flashcards activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Great for self-paced vocabulary drilling. Students can flip cards and repeat until confident.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Click to flip cards and have the class say the word together. Use choral repetition for pronunciation practice.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Emotion Bingo
Time for a class bingo game! Listen carefully to the emotion words and click the matching picture on your bingo card. First full line or full card wins!
How to Play Bingo:
Option 1: Students on Devices (Digital Version)
- Use the digital version where your teacher view of the lesson displays the cards that are being called out.
- Play the pronunciation sound of each word and the children mark it off their unique digital bingo card.
- Each student has a randomised bingo card so winners will vary!
Option 2: Print Out the Bingo Cards
- Print out the Bingo Cards from the attachment above, cut out the cards, and give one to each student.
- You call out the vocabulary words and students mark off their sheets.
- First student to complete a line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) calls "Bingo!" and wins.
5 - Class Matching Sheet
Your teacher will hand out worksheets. Draw lines to match each French emotion word to its English meaning and picture - perfect practice for what we've learned!
Worksheet Instructions:
- Print copies of this worksheet for your students before the lesson.
- Worksheets can be done during class time or for homework.
- Distribute one copy per student (or pair for collaborative work).
- The answer key is included at the end of the PDF - this is for teacher reference only.
