1 - Welcome to Shape Spotting
Have you ever noticed how many shapes are all around your classroom? Today we're going to learn the French names for 8 different shapes so you can describe them using the colours and numbers you've already learned!
Imagine describing a red star on the board or two blue triangles on a poster. You'll be able to spot shapes everywhere and say what they are in French.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 shapes in French
- Spot shapes in pictures and images
- Describe shapes using colours and numbers
2 - Meet the Shapes
Here are today's new French shape words. Click each word to hear how it's pronounced, then say it yourself! Notice that most shapes are masculine so they use 'le', but 'L'รฉtoile' and 'L'ovale' start with a vowel so they use 'L''.
Try combining them with colours from last lesson: 'le cercle rouge' (the red circle) or 'deux triangles bleus' (two blue triangles).
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet

- Great for homework, revision, or as a take-home reference.

3 - Shape Matching Game
Great job learning the shape names! Now test your memory by flipping cards to find matching pairs. Match each French shape word with its English translation - how quickly can you find them all?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Matching Pairs activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students match words to their translations. Encourage them to say the words aloud as they match.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Make it competitive - time students or split class into teams. Have students justify their matches.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Label the Shapes
Look carefully at each picture and click the correct French label. There are distractors to make it challenging - choose wisely! Listen to the audio if you need pronunciation help.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Spin the Shape Wheel
Spin the wheel to land on a mystery shape! Say the French name when it stops, then describe it using a colour and number from previous lessons. Can you say 'trois รฉtoiles rouges' or 'un cercle bleu'?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Spin the Wheel activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students spin the wheel and practise saying the vocabulary word that lands. Great for random selection and speaking practice.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Spin the wheel on the whiteboard and have students call out the word together. Use it to pick random students or vocabulary items.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
