Talking and Timing: Adding Dialogue and Delays

In this step-by-step lesson, you'll learn how to create a dynamic conversation between two characters using Scratch. You'll add dialogue to your sprites, use timing to ensure each character speaks at the right moment, and test your project to ensure a smooth conversation flow.

    1 - Introduction

    In this lesson, we’re going to make two characters have a conversation, just like in an interview! You’ll learn how to add dialogue to your sprites and use timing to make sure each character speaks at the right moment. By the end of this lesson, your sprites will be talking to each other on the screen!

    2 - Create a new project

    Let's start by creating a new Scratch project. First, go to the Scratch website by clicking here.

    Once you're on the Scratch website, click on 'Create' to start a new project. You will see a cat sprite on the screen.

    3 - Add Two Characters

    Start by adding two characters to your project from the sprite library.

    You can choose any two sprites you like— but for my example I will use Abby and Avery!


    4 - Set the Scene

    Next, choose a background that fits your interview.

    You might want to use a stage, a TV studio, or a park—anywhere you think an interview would happen.

    For my example, I will chose the park.


    5 - Start the Conversation

    We’ll start by making the first character speak.

    Drag the "when green flag clicked" block from the Events section into the coding area of the first sprite.

    Then, add the "say [Hello] for 2 seconds" block from the Looks section.
