1 - How Do You Travel?
Imagine you're planning a big adventure across France! How will you get from Paris to the beach? From the city to the mountains? Today we're learning all the ways to travel in French - from speedy trains to bicycles perfect for exploring Irish country roads too!
France has amazing transport like the TGV high-speed train that's faster than most cars. Knowing these words helps when reading signs at airports or train stations during your travels.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 different ways to travel in French
- Spot which transport words are masculine ('le') and which are feminine ('la')
- Match French transport words to their pictures
2 - New Transport Words
Here are the new French words for different ways to travel. Notice how some use le (masculine) and others use la (feminine) - just like fruits from earlier lessons! Click each word to hear the perfect French pronunciation, then say it yourself.
Some words look familiar like 'le bus' and 'le taxi' - these are called cognates and make learning easier. Others like 'l'avion' sound completely different but you'll remember them after a few practices!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet
Download Vocabulary Sheet (PDF)
- Print the vocabulary reference sheet for students to keep as a study aid.
- Great for homework, revision, or as a take-home reference.
- Students can use it alongside the interactive activity.
3 - Label the Vehicles
Look carefully at each picture and click the correct French transport word! There are four choices for each vehicle - listen to the audio if you need help remembering. Great job practising your visual recognition skills!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Sort by Gender
Time to practise French grammar! Drag each transport word into the correct column: le (masculine, blue) or la (feminine, pink). Listen to the audio as you sort to reinforce pronunciation. Remember: only two are feminine!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Gender Sorting activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students drag words into the correct gender category. Helps reinforce article patterns.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Ask students to explain WHY they think a word is masculine/feminine before revealing the answer.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Matching Challenge
Flip the cards to match each English transport word with its French translation! Work quickly to beat your best time. Listen for the audio confirmation when you find a match - excellent memory practice!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Matching Pairs activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students match words to their translations. Encourage them to say the words aloud as they match.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Make it competitive - time students or split class into teams. Have students justify their matches.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
