2 - What are Languages?
Imagine if everyone in the world had their own special secret code for talking. That's what languages are! They are the different ways people use words, sounds, and even pictures to chat, tell stories, and share ideas.
There are over 7,000 languages around the world. Some use letters like English, others use symbols or drawings. Each one is unique, like a treasure from different places. Learning a new language is like getting a magic key to make friends everywhere!

Discover how to say hello and other greetings in different languages with these interactive flashcards. Click on the card for a language to hear how it's pronounced.
Take your time to explore the cards, clicking them as often as you like to practise and get comfortable with the new words. It's a fun way to build your vocabulary step by step.
5 - Guess the Language Fun
Imagine hearing words from different parts of the world and figuring out which language they come from. In this activity, you'll listen to six short phrases and guess the language for each one. It's a great way to tune your ears to how people say hello in all sorts of places.
Get ready to listen carefully and make your best guess. You'll feel like a language detective uncovering clues from around the globe!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Guess the Language activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students listen to phrases and identify which language is being spoken.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Play each audio clip and have students vote. Discuss the distinctive sounds of each language.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
