1 - Bug Hunt Begins
Have you ever stopped to watch the tiny creatures buzzing around in your garden? Today we're going bug hunting - but with words! Spanish children love exploring nature and spotting insects just like you do in Ireland.
These little creatures have fascinating names in Spanish. Some you'll recognise from English, others sound completely different. By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to spot and name 8 different insects en español!
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

- Spot insects from pictures
- Hear and understand insect names when spoken
2 - Meet the Insects
Here are the 8 insects we'll learn about today. Notice how some start with 'el', some with 'la', and some with 'el' or 'la' - these are the Spanish words for 'the'. Click each word to hear how a Spanish speaker would say it, then try repeating yourself!
Look carefully at the pictures too - can you guess which insect matches which word before clicking? Some Spanish names sound very similar to English words, making them easier to remember.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.

- Great for homework, revision, or as a take-home reference.

3 - Label the Insects
Now test your recognition skills! Look at each insect picture and click the correct Spanish name from the options below. Listen carefully to the audio hints if you need help.
Remember some insects like 'la mariposa' (butterfly) have familiar names, while others like 'la mariquita' (ladybug) sound completely different!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Insect Word Search
Time for some bug hunting in a letter grid! Find all 8 Spanish insect names hidden in the puzzle - they might go horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Click and drag to highlight each word when you spot it.
Tip: Start with shorter words like 'la abeja' (bee) then work up to longer ones like 'la libélula' (dragonfly)!

5 - Bug Bingo
Get ready for insect bingo! Listen to the Spanish names and click the matching picture on your bingo card. First one to complete a line shouts 'Bingo!'
Your teacher will read the insect names - some you'll recognise immediately, others might need careful listening to the pronunciation differences.
How to Play Bingo:
Option 1: Students on Devices (Digital Version)
- Use the digital version where your teacher view of the lesson displays the cards that are being called out.
- Play the pronunciation sound of each word and the children mark it off their unique digital bingo card.
- Each student has a randomised bingo card so winners will vary!
Option 2: Print Out the Bingo Cards
- Print out the Bingo Cards from the attachment above, cut out the cards, and give one to each student.
- You call out the vocabulary words and students mark off their sheets.
- First student to complete a line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) calls "Bingo!" and wins.
