1 - What's the Weather Like?
Have you ever checked the weather forecast before going outside? In Germany, people check 'das Wetter' every day to plan their day. Today you'll learn how to talk about the weather in German - just like a real German weather reporter!
Germany has all kinds of weather, from sunny beaches in the north to snowy mountains in the Alps. Knowing these words will help you chat about the weather with German friends or understand weather reports when travelling.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Describe 8 different types of weather in German
- Listen to a German weather report and understand it
- Talk about today's weather like a German meteorologist
2 - Today's Weather Words
Here are today's new German weather words. Click each word to hear how it's pronounced! Notice how some words have der (masculine), die (feminine), or das (neuter) - this is German grammar in action.
Try spotting words that look similar to English (like 'Sonne' and 'sun'). These 'friends from English' make learning easier!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet

- Great for homework, revision, or as a take-home reference.

3 - Weather Report Listening
Listen to this German weather report and answer the questions! You'll hear a meteorologist describing different weather around Germany. Click each answer carefully - you'll hear the audio again if needed.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Listen & Answer activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students listen to audio and answer comprehension questions. They can replay audio as needed.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Play audio to the whole class, then discuss answers together. Replay tricky sections.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Weather Bingo
Time for weather bingo! Listen to the weather words and click the matching picture on your card. Remember the free space in the middle! Work quickly to get five in a row.
How to Play Bingo:
Option 1: Students on Devices (Digital Version)
- Use the digital version where your teacher view of the lesson displays the cards that are being called out.
- Play the pronunciation sound of each word and the children mark it off their unique digital bingo card.
- Each student has a randomised bingo card so winners will vary!
Option 2: Print Out the Bingo Cards
- Print out the Bingo Cards from the attachment above, cut out the cards, and give one to each student.
- You call out the vocabulary words and students mark off their sheets.
- First student to complete a line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) calls "Bingo!" and wins.
5 - Spin the Weather Wheel
Spin the wheel to see what weather you'll get! Try saying the German word before it reveals the picture. Can you describe today's weather using what lands on the wheel?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Spin the Wheel activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students spin the wheel and practise saying the vocabulary word that lands. Great for random selection and speaking practice.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Spin the wheel on the whiteboard and have students call out the word together. Use it to pick random students or vocabulary items.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
