1 - Welcome to Classroom Essentials
Have you ever been in the middle of a French lesson and needed to borrow a pencil? Today you'll learn all the essential classroom objects in French so you can ask for what you need!
In French schools, students carry their 'le sac à dos' (backpack) filled with supplies just like we do. Knowing these words helps you follow classroom instructions and join in group activities.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 10 essential classroom objects in French
- Recognise school supplies from pictures
- Use these words in conversations with classmates
2 - Today's Classroom Vocabulary
Here are the 10 essential classroom objects we'll learn today. Click each word to hear the correct French pronunciation, then practise saying it yourself. Notice how some words like 'le stylo' (pen) sound similar to English!
Most classroom objects are masculine (le) but a few like 'la règle' (ruler) are feminine (la). Listen carefully to the article before each word.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet
Download Vocabulary Sheet (PDF)
- Print the vocabulary reference sheet for students to keep as a study aid.
- Great for homework, revision, or as a take-home reference.
- Students can use it alongside the interactive activity.
3 - Label the Classroom Objects
Look at each picture of a classroom object and click the correct French label. There are four choices for each image - choose carefully and listen to the audio if you need help!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Find the Hidden Words
The classroom vocabulary words are hidden in the letter grid! Click and drag to highlight each French word from our list. Words can go horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Word Search activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students find vocabulary words hidden in a letter grid. Click and drag to highlight found words.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Display the word search on your interactive whiteboard. Have students come up to find and highlight words.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Classroom Labelling Sheet
Your teacher will hand out worksheets with pictures of classroom objects. Write the correct French word under each picture using today's vocabulary. Use the word bank at the top to help you!
Worksheet Instructions:
- Print copies of this worksheet for your students before the lesson.
- Worksheets can be done during class time or for homework.
- Distribute one copy per student (or pair for collaborative work).
- The answer key is included at the end of the PDF - this is for teacher reference only.
