1 - Welcome to the Ocean
Have you ever wondered what amazing creatures live deep in the ocean? Today we’re diving underwater to meet some incredible sea creatures and learn their names in German!
Germany has a long coastline along the North Sea and Baltic Sea, so German people love going to the beach and exploring marine life. Many visit aquariums to see creatures like dolphins and sharks up close.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 amazing sea creatures in German
- Sort sea creatures by masculine (der) and feminine (die) nouns
- Talk about sea creatures with a partner
2 - Meet the Sea Creatures
Here are today’s new German sea creature words. Click each word to hear how it’s pronounced, then repeat after the audio. Notice that some words start with ‘der’ (masculine) and others with ‘die’ (feminine) - this is German grammar you’ll practise later!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.

3 - Flashcard Dive
Time for a memory challenge! You’ll see the English name of a sea creature - can you remember the German before flipping the card? Say the word out loud to help it stick in your memory.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Flashcards activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Great for self-paced vocabulary drilling. Students can flip cards and repeat until confident.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Click to flip cards and have the class say the word together. Use choral repetition for pronunciation practice.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Gender Sort Challenge
Now sort the sea creatures into the correct gender columns! Drag each word to ‘Der’ (masculine) or ‘Die’ (feminine). Remember what you noticed during the introduction?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Gender Sorting activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students drag words into the correct gender category. Helps reinforce article patterns.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Ask students to explain WHY they think a word is masculine/feminine before revealing the answer.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Aquarium Conversations
Work with a partner at the aquarium! Follow the conversation prompts together, taking turns as Person 1 and Person 2. Listen to the audio, then practise speaking.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Partner Practice activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students practise dialogue with a partner or family member. They can click to hear each phrase before repeating.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Pair students up to practise the dialogue. Model the conversation first with a volunteer, then have pairs practise.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
