1 - What Are You Wearing?
Have you ever wondered how to talk about clothes in German? Today we're going to learn how to name all the clothes in your wardrobe auf Deutsch!
In Germany, people love fashion and dressing stylishly for every occasion. Whether it's a school uniform, sports kit, or party outfit, knowing the German words for clothes helps you describe what people are wearing.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 items of clothing in German
- Spot which clothes are masculine ('der'), feminine ('die'), or neuter ('das')
- Describe outfits like a German fashion expert
2 - Today's Clothes Vocabulary
Here are 8 essential clothing items in German. Notice how some use 'der' (masculine), 'die' (feminine), or 'das' (neuter) - every noun in German has a gender! Click each word to hear the perfect German pronunciation, then repeat after hearing it.
Look for familiar-looking words too - 'der Hut' sounds like 'hat' with a German twist, doesn't it?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.

3 - Sort the Clothes by Gender
Every German noun is either masculine, feminine, or neuter! Drag each clothing item into the correct column - 'der' for masculine, 'die' for feminine, or 'das' for neuter. Listen to the audio if you need a pronunciation reminder.
Tip: Most dresses and skirts are feminine, but coats and hats are masculine. Can you spot the pattern?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Gender Sorting activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students drag words into the correct gender category. Helps reinforce article patterns.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Ask students to explain WHY they think a word is masculine/feminine/neuter before revealing the answer.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Label the Outfit
Look at these pictures of different outfits and clothes. Click the correct German label for each item! There are four choices for each picture - listen to the audio if you need help.
Remember what you learned about genders to choose wisely!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices

- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Clothes Word Search
Your teacher will hand out worksheets. Find and circle all 8 clothing words hidden in the puzzle! They might go backwards, up, down, or diagonally. Use the word list as a guide.
Tip: Start with shorter words like 'Rock' and work up to longer ones!
