1 - Welcome to Food Time
Have you ever wondered what your school lunch would be called in Spanish? Today we're discovering the Spanish words for everyday foods that you eat at breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
Spanish people enjoy delicious meals just like we do in Ireland - fresh bread with butter, tasty cheese, and yummy pizza. Knowing these food words helps when reading Spanish menus or cooking Spanish recipes at home.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 everyday foods in Spanish
- Spot if a food word is masculine (el) or feminine (la)
- Match Spanish food words to their pictures
2 - Meet the Food Words
Here are today's new Spanish food words. Click each one to hear how a Spanish person would say it at the dinner table! Notice that some foods use el (masculine) and some use la (feminine) - every Spanish noun has a gender.
Did you spot any familiar words? 'La pizza' sounds just like English! These borrowed words make Spanish easier to learn.
How to Use This Activity:

- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.

3 - Label the Foods
Look carefully at each picture of food. Click the Spanish word that matches what's shown! This helps you recognise the words when you see Spanish food pictures.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Match the Meals
Flip the cards to match each English food to its Spanish name. Can you find all the pairs quickly? Listen for the audio clues if you need help!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Matching Pairs activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students match words to their translations. Encourage them to say the words aloud as they match.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Make it competitive - time students or split class into teams. Have students justify their matches.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Sort by Gender
Every Spanish food has a gender! Drag each food word into the correct box: el (masculine) or la/los (feminine). Listen to check your answer.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Gender Sorting activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students drag words into the correct gender category. Helps reinforce article patterns.

- Ask students to explain WHY they think a word is masculine/feminine before revealing the answer.
