1 - Welcome to Pet Talk
Do you have a pet at home? Today we're learning how to talk about pets in German - the most popular pets that German children love too!
Germany has lots of pet-loving families just like in Ireland. Knowing these pet words helps you chat with German friends about your favourite animals.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 popular pets in German
- Sort pets by masculine (der) and feminine (die) words
- Describe your pet to a German-speaking friend
2 - Meet the Pets
Here are the German names for 8 popular pets. Click each word to hear the pronunciation, then say it yourself!
Notice most pets use der (masculine), but some use die (feminine). Which ones do you think they are?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.

See the English pet name and try saying the German before flipping! Great practice for remembering all 8 pets.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Flashcards activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Great for self-paced vocabulary drilling. Students can flip cards and repeat until confident.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Click to flip cards and have the class say the word together. Use choral repetition for pronunciation practice.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Sort by Gender
Drag each pet into the correct column: der (masculine) or die (feminine). Can you spot the pattern?

- Students complete the Gender Sorting activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students drag words into the correct gender category. Helps reinforce article patterns.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Ask students to explain WHY they think a word is masculine/feminine before revealing the answer.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Label the Pets
Look at each pet picture and click the correct German name! Listen to the audio if you need help.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
