1 - Welcome to Sports Time

Guten Tag! Do you love playing sports? Today we're learning how to talk about sports in German - from Fußball to Schwimmen and everything in between!

In Germany, children play many of the same sports we do in Ireland, but they have their own German names. Knowing these words will help you chat with German classmates about your favourite activities.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Name 8 popular sports in German
    • Spot which sports are masculine (der) and which are feminine (die)
    • Talk about your favourite sports with a partner

    2 - Meet the Sports

Here are today's new German sports words. Click each one to hear how it's pronounced, then say it out loud yourself!

Notice that most sports use 'der' (masculine), but Schwimmen and Laufen use 'die' (feminine). Many sports keep their English names but add the German article in front.

    3 - Label the Sports

Label the ImageLook carefully at each sports picture and click the correct German label. There are three choices for each image - choose wisely!

    4 - Sort by Gender

Gender SortingDrag each sport into the correct box: 'Der' for masculine or 'Die' for feminine. Listen to the audio if you need a reminder of each word!

    5 - Sports Worksheet

Label Picture WorksheetYour teacher will hand out worksheets. Look at each sports picture and write the correct German word underneath. Use the word bank at the top to help you!
