1 - Welcome to Sports Time
Do you love playing sports after school? Today we're learning how to talk about sports in Spanish - from fútbol to natación and everything in between!
In Spain, children play many of the same sports we do in Ireland, but they have their own names for them. Knowing these words helps you chat with Spanish friends about what you like to play.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 popular sports in Spanish
- Spot which sports are 'el' (masculine) and which are 'la' (feminine)
- Talk about your favourite sports with a partner
2 - Meet the Sports
Here are today's new Spanish sports words. Click each one to hear the correct pronunciation, then say it yourself! Notice how many sports use 'el' because they're masculine - but watch out for the two that use 'la'.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.

3 - Flashcard Challenge
See the English sport name and try saying the Spanish word before you flip the card! This helps your memory stick the words firmly.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Flashcards activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Great for self-paced vocabulary drilling. Students can flip cards and repeat until confident.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Click to flip cards and have the class say the word together. Use choral repetition for pronunciation practice.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Sort by Gender
Drag each sport into the correct column - 'el' for masculine or 'la' for feminine. Remember what you noticed from the word table!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Gender Sorting activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students drag words into the correct gender category. Helps reinforce article patterns.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Ask students to explain WHY they think a word is masculine/feminine before revealing the answer.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Partner Sports Chat
Find a partner and practise talking about sports! Take turns being Person 1 and Person 2, using the conversation prompts below.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Partner Practice activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students practise dialogue with a partner or family member. They can click to hear each phrase before repeating.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Pair students up to practise the dialogue. Model the conversation first with a volunteer, then have pairs practise.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
