1 - Welcome to the Café
Imagine you're sitting at a German café watching people enjoy their drinks. What do you think they're ordering? Today you'll learn all the drinks on a German café menu so you can order confidently next time you're in Germany!
German cafés are famous worldwide - from Berlin to small village squares. People linger over coffee or 'heiße Schokolade' (hot chocolate) while chatting with friends.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Order 8 popular German drinks
- Listen to café conversations and understand drink orders
- Spot which German drink words sound similar to English
2 - Drinks Menu
Here's today's café menu with all 8 drinks in German. Click each drink to hear how a German waiter would say it! Notice how some words like 'der Kaffee' and 'der Saft' sound very similar to English.
Most drinks are masculine ('der'), but watch for 'die Limonade' which is feminine. Try saying each one after you hear it - German pronunciation gets easier with practice!
How to Use This Activity:

3 - Café Order Listening
Listen to this café conversation and answer the questions. You'll hear customers ordering drinks - pay close attention to recognise the words from our menu!
Real German cafés are busy places with lots of chatter. This activity helps you understand drink orders even when spoken quickly. Click play and listen carefully before choosing your answers.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Listen & Answer activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students listen to audio and answer comprehension questions. They can replay audio as needed.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Play audio to the whole class, then discuss answers together. Replay tricky sections.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Label the Drinks
Look at each drink picture and click the correct German name! This tests if you can recognise the drinks by sight - just like a waiter taking orders.
Each picture has four choices including some tricky distractors. Take your time and think about the images you've seen with each word. Great job practising your visual vocabulary recognition!
How to Use This Activity:

- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)

- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Classroom Drinks Worksheet
Your teacher will hand out worksheets with drink pictures. Write the correct German name under each picture using words from today's café menu. This is perfect practice for recognising drinks visually!
