1 - Safari Adventure
Imagine you're on a safari in Africa, spotting amazing wild animals! Today we're learning how to name these incredible creatures in French. French explorers and scientists use these words when studying animals around the world.
By the end of this lesson, you will:
- Spot and name 8 wild animals in French
- Know which animals use 'le' and which use 'la'
- Recognise wild animals from pictures
2 - Meet the Wild Animals
Here are today's new French words for wild animals you'll see on safari. Notice how some start with 'le' (masculine) and others with 'la' (feminine) or 'l'' (before vowels). Click each word to hear the correct French pronunciation, then repeat after it!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet

3 - Label the Safari
Look at each wild animal picture and click the correct French name! There are four choices for each - choose carefully and listen to the audio if you need help.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Sort by Gender
Drag each animal into the correct column: 'le' (masculine) or 'la' (feminine). Listen to the audio and check the article to help you decide!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Gender Sorting activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students drag words into the correct gender category. Helps reinforce article patterns.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Ask students to explain WHY they think a word is masculine/feminine before revealing the answer.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Flashcard Challenge
See the English word first and try saying the French before flipping! Use the pictures and phonetics to help you remember.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Flashcards activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Great for self-paced vocabulary drilling. Students can flip cards and repeat until confident.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Click to flip cards and have the class say the word together. Use choral repetition for pronunciation practice.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
