1 - Welcome to Talking About Yourself
Imagine you're in Germany and someone asks you about your daily routine or when your birthday is. Today you'll learn how to answer personal questions in German using phrases like 'Ich bin ... Jahre alt' and 'Mein Geburtstag ist am...'!
These phrases help you talk about yourself confidently - perfect for making German friends or chatting with visitors from Germany.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Answer questions about your age, birthday and favourite things in German
- Use phrases like 'Ich bin' and 'Ich heiße'
- Listen to questions and respond quickly
2 - About Me Phrases
Here are the key German phrases for talking about yourself. These are perfect for answering questions like 'How old are you?' or 'When is your birthday?' Click each phrase to hear how it's pronounced, then practise saying it with the right rhythm.
Notice how many phrases start with 'Ich' (I) - this is how German people introduce personal information. Try substituting your own details!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet

3 - Flashcard Practice
See the English phrase first and try saying the German before flipping each card. This helps your brain connect 'My name is' directly to 'Ich heiße'!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Flashcards activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Great for self-paced vocabulary drilling. Students can flip cards and repeat until confident.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Click to flip cards and have the class say the word together. Use choral repetition for pronunciation practice.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Listen and Respond
Listen carefully to short conversations where people ask about names, ages and birthdays. Answer the comprehension questions by clicking the correct response - just like you'd answer a real German friend!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Listen & Answer activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students listen to audio and answer comprehension questions. They can replay audio as needed.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Play audio to the whole class, then discuss answers together. Replay tricky sections.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Matching Challenge
Flip the cards to match each English phrase with its German version. Can you find all 8 pairs quickly? Listen to the audio hints if you need help remembering!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Matching Pairs activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students match words to their translations. Encourage them to say the words aloud as they match.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Make it competitive - time students or split class into teams. Have students justify their matches.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
