1 - Welcome to Season Time
Have you noticed how our daily routines change with the seasons? In winter we might wake up at 'acht Uhr' when it's dark, but in summer we play outside until late evening. Today we'll learn German time phrases to talk about when things happen during different seasons!
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Tell the time using o'clock, half past, quarter past, and quarter to
- Say morning and afternoon in German
- Listen to rhymes and find key time information
2 - Time Phrases for Seasons
Let's learn the key German phrases for telling time that help us describe seasonal routines. Click each word in the table below to hear how it's pronounced, then repeat after the audio. Notice how some phrases like 'dreißig' (half past) are the same all year round!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.

3 - Flashcard Time Challenge
See the English time phrase first and try to remember the German before flipping each card! These are the exact phrases from our word table, so use what you just learned.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Flashcards activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Great for self-paced vocabulary drilling. Students can flip cards and repeat until confident.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Click to flip cards and have the class say the word together. Use choral repetition for pronunciation practice.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Match Time to Pictures
Flip the cards to match each German time phrase to its clock picture! Think about what 'viertel vor' looks like on a clock face.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Matching Pairs activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students match words to their translations. Encourage them to say the words aloud as they match.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Make it competitive - time students or split class into teams. Have students justify their matches.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Class Matching Worksheet
Your teacher will hand out worksheets. Draw lines to match each English time phrase to its German translation and clock picture - perfect practice for what we've just learned!
