1 - Welcome to Your German House Tour

Have you ever wondered what different rooms in a German house are called? Today we're taking a tour of die RΓ€ume im Haus - the rooms of the house!

In Germany, homes can look very different from Irish houses - some are tall narrow townhouses in cities, others are timber-framed farmhouses in the countryside. But they all have rooms where families eat, sleep, relax, and play, just like us.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Name 8 different rooms of the house in German
    • Spot which rooms are masculine ('der'), feminine ('die'), or neuter ('das')
    • Describe your own home using German room words

2 - Meet the House Rooms

Here are the German words for 8 important house rooms. Click each word to hear how it's pronounced, then repeat after the audio.

Notice that rooms use der (masculine), die (feminine), or das (neuter). In German, every noun has a gender - it's an important grammar rule!

Some words might look familiar - 'das Badezimmer' sounds similar to English 'bathroom', doesn't it? These are called cognates and make learning easier.

    3 - Label the House

Label the ImageTime to test your room knowledge! Look at each picture of a house room and click the correct German label from the options below. Listen to the audio if you need help remembering.

Remember to look carefully at the pictures - some rooms might look similar at first glance!

    4 - Match the Rooms

Matching PairsGreat labelling work! Now flip the cards to match each German room name with its English translation. Can you find all 8 pairs quickly?

Tip: Look for words you know well first - they can help you remember the trickier ones!

    5 - Sort by Gender

Gender SortingNow practise German grammar! Drag each room name into the correct column: der (masculine), die (feminine), or das (neuter). Listen to each word if you need a reminder.

Hint: There are words in each column. Which ones start with 'der', 'die', or 'das'?
