1 - Welcome to Your Spanish House Tour
Have you ever wondered what different rooms in a Spanish house are called? Today we're taking a tour of las habitaciones de la casa - the rooms of the house!
In Spain, homes can look very different from Irish houses - some are tall narrow townhouses in cities, others are stone farmhouses in the countryside. But they all have rooms where families eat, sleep, relax, and play, just like us.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 different rooms of the house in Spanish
- Spot which rooms are masculine ('el') and which are feminine ('la')
- Describe your own home using Spanish room words
2 - Meet the House Rooms
Here are the Spanish words for 8 important house rooms. Click each word to hear how it's pronounced, then repeat after the audio.
Notice that most rooms use la (feminine), but some use el (masculine). In Spanish, every noun has a gender - it's an important grammar rule!
Some words might look familiar - 'el garaje' looks just like English, doesn't it? These are called cognates and make learning easier.
How to Use This Activity:

- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.

3 - Label the House
Time to test your room knowledge! Look at each picture of a house room and click the correct Spanish label from the options below. Listen to the audio if you need help remembering.
Remember to look carefully at the pictures - some rooms might look similar at first glance!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Match the Rooms
Great labelling work! Now flip the cards to match each Spanish room name with its English translation. Can you find all 8 pairs quickly?
Tip: Look for words you know well first - they can help you remember the trickier ones!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Matching Pairs activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students match words to their translations. Encourage them to say the words aloud as they match.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Make it competitive - time students or split class into teams. Have students justify their matches.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Sort by Gender
Now practise Spanish grammar! Drag each room name into the correct column: el (masculine) or la (feminine). Listen to each word if you need a reminder.
Hint: There are 4 words in each column. Which ones start with 'el'?

- Students drag words into the correct gender category. Helps reinforce article patterns.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Ask students to explain WHY they think a word is masculine/feminine before revealing the answer.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
