1 - Welcome to Your German House
Imagine you're giving a tour of your house to a German-speaking friend. What rooms would you show them first? Today we're learning the German names for all the main rooms in a house!
In Germany, homes come in all shapes and sizes - from city apartments to country farmhouses. Knowing room names helps you chat about where you live, what you like doing in each room, and even giving directions around the house.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 rooms of a German house
- Spot which rooms are 'der' (masculine), 'die' (feminine), or 'das' (neuter)
- Label a house plan with the correct German room names
2 - House Rooms Vocabulary
Here are the German names for 8 important rooms in a house. Notice that some start with 'der' (masculine), others with 'die' (feminine), or 'das' (neuter) - every noun in German has a gender! Click each word to hear the pronunciation, then say it yourself.
Some words like 'Der Salon' sound quite similar to English, while others like 'Die Küche' are completely different. Have a go at repeating each one after you hear it!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet

- Great for homework, revision, or as a take-home reference.

3 - Label the House
Time to test your room knowledge! Look at each picture of a room and click the correct German name from the options below. Can you get them all right first time?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
4 - Sort by Gender
Every German noun is either masculine ('der'), feminine ('die'), or neuter ('das'). Drag each room into the correct column to practise recognising noun genders!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Gender Sorting activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students drag words into the correct gender category. Helps reinforce article patterns.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Ask students to explain WHY they think a word is masculine/feminine/neuter before revealing the answer.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - House Labelling Sheet
Your teacher will hand out worksheets showing different rooms of a house. Write the correct German name under each picture using the words you've learned today!

- Print copies of this worksheet for your students before the lesson.
- Worksheets can be done during class time or for homework.
- Distribute one copy per student (or pair for collaborative work).
