1 - Welcome to Bird Watching
Have you ever watched birds flying high in the sky or spotted colourful ones in a park? Today we're going bird watching in Spanish! Spain has amazing birds too - from elegant swans on lakes to bright flamingos in zoos.
Imagine you're exploring a Spanish wildlife park and need to tell your friends what birds you see. That's exactly what you'll learn to do today!
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name 8 amazing birds in Spanish
- Spot birds from pictures and sounds
- Play fun bird games in Spanish
2 - Meet the Birds
Here are today's new Spanish bird names. Click each word to hear how it's pronounced! Notice most birds are masculine so they use 'el', but watch for 'el águila' which starts with a stressed 'a' sound.
Try to spot any words that sound similar to English - like 'el pingüino' for penguin. These 'friends from English' make learning easier!
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Digital Reference (Interactive)
- Display the Word Table on the whiteboard or let students access on their devices.
- Click/tap words to hear pronunciation - great for listening and speaking practice.
- Go through each word together, practising pronunciation as a class.
Option 2: Printed Reference Sheet

- Print the vocabulary reference sheet for students to keep as a study aid.
- Great for homework, revision, or as a take-home reference.
- Students can use it alongside the interactive activity.
3 - Bird Bingo
Time for bird bingo! Listen carefully to the bird names called out and click them on your bingo card. Work quickly to get a line or full house!
How to Play Bingo:
Option 1: Students on Devices (Digital Version)
- Use the digital version where your teacher view of the lesson displays the cards that are being called out.
- Play the pronunciation sound of each word and the children mark it off their unique digital bingo card.
- Each student has a randomised bingo card so winners will vary!
Option 2: Print Out the Bingo Cards
- Print out the Bingo Cards from the attachment above, cut out the cards, and give one to each student.
- You call out the vocabulary words and students mark off their sheets.
- First student to complete a line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) calls "Bingo!" and wins.
4 - Label the Birds
Look at each bird picture and click the correct Spanish name from the options below. Can you spot all eight birds you've just learned?
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Label the Image activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students see an image and select the correct word from multiple choices. Good for visual learners.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Show the image and have students write their answer on mini whiteboards before revealing options.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
5 - Bird Conversations
Work with a partner to practise bird watching conversations! Take turns being the bird spotter and your partner responds. Swap roles after each conversation.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Partner Practice activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students practise dialogue with a partner or family member. They can click to hear each phrase before repeating.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Pair students up to practise the dialogue. Model the conversation first with a volunteer, then have pairs practise.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
