The school noticeboard says 86 pupils were in school today. Eighty-six! Could we build that with ten-rods and unit cubes? How many tens would we need?
On our place-value mat, the left column is tens (the ten-rods) and the right column is units (the loose cubes). Four numbers to watch. For each one, read the tens and the units, then say how many rods and how many loose cubes make that number.
Watch the last one carefully. What is the zero doing?
We will build numbers the teacher calls on the place-value mat. First we all say how many tens and how many units. Then one pupil builds on the board. We all agree or help fix it.
On your Tens and units grid, draw three ten-rods and four unit cubes for 34. Write 34 underneath.
Together we work through 23 → 45 → 70 → 87. For each number, we all say how many tens and how many units. Then one pupil builds it on the board and we check.
