Here is a question that catches people out. How many days is it from 28 February to 3 March? Have a think, then hands up.
And here is the twist: does the answer change depending on which year it is?
Give five seconds of quiet think-time before any hands go up. Take two or three answers, don't settle which is right yet.
The point of the hook is that pupils cannot answer without knowing whether it is a leap year. Hold the disagreement open — the leap-year wrinkle is the whole reason this lesson exists, and it lands harder if the class argues it out first.
We count durations by hopping along a day-line, not by subtracting the date numbers. A day-line is just a number line where each step is one day. Look at the three counts marked on the day-line. For each one, notice how the count crosses the end of the month.
First count, worked all the way through: start at 15 March (marked 15 on the line) and hop forward until you reach 33 on the line. March ends at the marker on 31, so the next hop is 1 April (not day 32 of March), then 2 April at 33. That is 18 hops, so the duration is 18 days and the target date is 2 April.
Second count: hop in sevens for 91 days and notice where you land.
The last one is a leap-year February. Be ready to say how many days it is from 28 February to 3 March, and why that is different from an ordinary year.
Today we work through these durations together on the day-line, crossing the end of May each time. Day 0 on the line is 1 May, and each hop is one day. May has 31 days, so the end of May is marked at day 30 and 1 June is marked right after it. We'll point to the end of May before we hop past it.

The single explore line runs 0–60 from 1 May at day 0, and the end of May is a labelled marker at day 30 with 1 June marked right after. Every task reads from the same start, so the month-end pupils cross is visible on screen, they do not have to hold it in their heads. Ask a pupil to point to the end-of-May marker before the 40-day hop crosses it, and land the answer on 10 June.
Spoken extension (no on-screen line needed): if the class is flying, pose 15 December, count on 3 weeks aloud and ask what happens to the year, not just the month — hold out for a pupil to notice the count slips into January of the next year.
In your maths copy, list the months with their day-counts using the rhyme to help you ("Thirty days has September, April, June and November..."). Write each month and its number of days:
Then solve each duration problem from the board, showing your day-by-day or week count underneath.
Walk the room glancing at the day-counts — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. Watch for pupils writing 30 for the 31-day months; the rhyme names only the 30-day ones, so everything not in the rhyme (except February) has 31.
Today we work through these problems together, each one a step harder. For each one, spot the action words, choose the operation, and count carefully across the calendar.
This is the practice round — pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
Spoken teacher-led stretch (outside the scored set): once the four problems are done, ask the class aloud how many days they have been alive so far this year — count the whole months already passed using their copybook day-counts, then add the days into the current month. There is more than one sensible answer depending on today's date, so treat it as a reasoning task and accept any correct count for the class's actual date. Watch for pupils forgetting February's length when the count runs through it.
