Look at the person beside you. In one English sentence, describe what they are wearing right now.
Keep it short: colour plus item, for example “a blue jumper and black trousers”. In a moment we will learn the Spanish words for clothes like these.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name eight clothing items in Spanish with el, la or los
- Label a dressed figure with the right Spanish words
- Compare school dress customs and recycle one Spanish clothes word
Give pairs about thirty seconds for the English description, then take three or four answers aloud. Do not translate yet; the flashcards will supply the Spanish. Notice who already knows a clothing word from home or a trip, and come back to them later if they volunteer it. A warm “great noticing” when someone spots colour plus item sets a friendly tone for the lesson.
Here are today's eight clothing words. English shows first: try to say the Spanish before you flip, then listen and repeat together. Watch which ones take el, la or los.
Run this whole-class on the IWB. Flip one card at a time, play the audio, then have the class repeat twice: once all together, once by table. Insist on the article every time: camisa alone is not enough; la camisa is the answer.
Pronunciation guide (Castilian model — use with or without audio):
- la camisa — lah kah-MEE-thah
- los pantalones — lohs pan-tah-LOH-nes
- la falda — lah FAL-dah
- el vestido — el ves-TEE-doh
- los zapatos — lohs thah-PAH-tohs
- el sombrero — el som-BREH-roh
- el abrigo — el ah-BREE-goh
- el suéter — el soo-EH-tehr
Point out that the z in los zapatos and the c in la camisa both sound like the th in think in this Spain Spanish model, and that el suéter carries a stress mark on the é. Celebrate big when they land the th in zapatos — that is a proper Spain Spanish sound. Aside on el sombrero: the image is a brimmed hat; for a woolly hat you would often hear el gorro, and for a cap la gorra. Today we are learning el sombrero.
Sofía is getting ready for a rainy day in Bilbao. We will label what she puts on together on the board. When a classmate places a word, say it aloud with el, la or los. Be ready to help if you know it.
Model the first label yourself so the class sees how the markers work, then invite volunteers to the board. After each correct placement, have the whole class say the word with its article. If someone lands on the wrong tag, play the audio for the right word and try again rather than moving on in silence. When the figure is fully labelled, lead a class victory chorus of all eight with articles — make it loud and proud.
Open your copy. Write four clothing words from today's list, each with el, la or los. You can pick ones you are wearing, or any four from the board. Check the board for spelling and the accent mark on suéter.
Pause the board. Keep the flashcards or a completed label image visible so pupils can check spelling and articles. Walk the room and check that every noun has its article in front: a bare list will not carry the gender pairing. Praise careful accents and full phrases as you circulate. Do not collect these.
We will match Spanish and English on the board. When a pair is turned, whisper the Spanish with el, la or los.
A fresh look at the same eight words. Whole class on the IWB with volunteers taking turns to flip two cards. If a pair is missed twice, stop and chorus the Spanish with the article before continuing. Listen for the th in los zapatos (lohs thah-PAH-tohs) and the rolled r sound in el sombrero (el som-BREH-roh). Optional only if devices are already out: pairs may run a second round at tables — default is IWB.
