Two 4th classes, Rang Rua and Rang Gorm, chose their favourite lunch. Their choices are on one chart. Each lunch has two coloured bars: one for Rang Rua and one for Rang Gorm. The key tells you which colour is which class.
Just look and notice: what is the same about the two classes, and what is different? There is no wrong answer here. If you are not sure whether one lunch is really more popular in one class than the other, that is fine. We will learn how to check that fairly in a moment.
Take three hands-up answers, not open call-outs. Reassure the class that an uncertain answer is expected here. Do not settle whether one lunch is 'really' more popular yet, hold that until Watch and Notice, where the matched scale makes it clear.
Listen for anyone who reads the taller bar as 'more popular' without checking which class it belongs to, that is the noticing this lesson builds on.
Here is that same chart again. Each lunch still has two coloured bars, one for Rang Rua and one for Rang Gorm, and the key tells you which colour is which class.
The scale is the row of numbers going up the side. It tells you how tall each bar is. This chart goes up in even steps to 15, and both classes share that one scale.
Before anyone compares heights, check the scale is the same for both bars. Here is why that matters, using sandwich. Rang Rua is on 12 and Rang Gorm is on 9. On this shared scale, Rua's bar is taller, so sandwich really was chosen more in Rang Rua.
Now picture an unfair drawing of the same numbers: Rang Rua still on a scale to 15, but Rang Gorm drawn on a scale that only goes up to 9. Gorm's bar of 9 would fill its whole side and look taller than Rua's 12, even though 9 is less than 12. The heights would trick you. That is why two bars must use the same scale before you compare them.
With our fair shared scale locked in, watch for the lunches that were higher in one class, the lunches that were lower, and the lunch that barely differed.
Point at the scale first: same even steps for both bars? yes, in 1s to 15. Do not let height talk start until that is said.
Worked mismatch example (you narrate; interactive stays on the fair chart). Sandwich numbers: Rua 12, Gorm 9. On the shared scale Rua is taller, so more in Rua. Unfair version of the same numbers: Rua still scaled to 15, Gorm scaled only to 9, so Gorm's bar fills its side and looks taller even though 9 is less than 12. Revoice: heights only mean 'more' when both bars share one scale.
Then the rose/fell read on the fair chart: sandwich higher in Rua (12 vs 9); salad higher in Gorm (4 vs 7); wrap differed least (8 and 6); sandwich and salad both differ by 3.
Slip to watch: pupil treats taller as 'more' before confirming the shared scale.
Today we build the comparison ourselves. Here are two weeks of the school library: how many books were borrowed each day.
We will build Week 1 first, then add Week 2 one day at a time. Before each Week 2 bar goes up, say whether that day rose, fell, or stayed the same.
Keep both weeks on the same scale (up in 1s to 15) so a wrong scale can't sneak in. Build all of Week 1 quickly as a block first, then add Week 2 one day at a time so the class predicts each Week 2 bar against the Week 1 bar already standing beside it.
Wednesday is the 'stayed the same' day (12 and 12), pause there and ask what equal heights on a matched scale tell us. Thursday jumps most (5 up to 11).
In your maths copy, write two sentences comparing the two weeks of library data. One sentence must name something that was bigger in Week 1, and one must name something that was bigger in Week 2. Name the numbers you used, like this: "Friday was busier in Week 1 with 14 books, but only 7 in Week 2."
Walk the room glancing for a named number in each sentence, that is the difference between a comparison and a guess. No individual marking; this is whole-class copybook practice, not assessment.
Today we read two data sets together and back up every answer with the chart. On the board are two teams' scores across four rounds of a class quiz game.
We'll work through these together. Point to the bars you used before you answer.
This is the practice round, pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
Round 1: Gaillimh ahead (10 to 6). Round 4: Corcaigh ahead (10 to 6). Round 3 is the level round (8 and 8), the key one for the matched-scale idea. 'Improved most' is Corcaigh, climbing 6 to 10.
Push every answer back to the bars: which two bars told you that? An answer with no bar behind it is a guess.
