Counting Back 1, 2, and Taking Away 0

This lesson helps pupils learn to count back 1 or 2 on a number line to solve subtraction problems. They also explore what happens when zero is subtracted and realise the number remains the same.

    Number line jumps

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedHopscotch in the yard. Aoife stood on square 9 and hopped back 2 squares. Where did she land?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~8 mins

Two take-aways on the number line. The jumps sit back toward 0. Read each landing number.

Now look at 12 − 0. The counter on the line (the starting spot) does not move. Taking away 0 means no jump at all — the number stays the same.

    3 - Try It Together ~8 mins

Today we show take-aways as jumps back:

    • 8 − 1
    • 11 − 2
    • 15 − 0
    • 14 − 2
    Key point

On the zero one, stay put — no jump. Say the landing number out loud before we check.

    4 - Write 9 − 2 = 7 in Your Copy ~2 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

    In your maths copy, write 9 − 2 = 7.

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

Today we work through these take-aways together:

    • 5 − 1
    • 8 − 2
    • 13 − 0
    • 16 − 2
    Watch out

The zero one catches people out — say the landing number before you jump.
