Our fruit survey is finished, and we can show it three ways: a tally, a row of fruit pictures, and a block graph.
Detectives: if all three tell the same story, which one do you think will be easiest to read, and why?
Same fruit votes, three different pictures. Watch for the winner each time: longest tally, longest picture row, tallest tower. Do they name the same fruit?
We will turn this tally into a picture row: one picture for every mark.
The tally says apple has 4, banana has 5 and orange has 3.
One pupil builds each fruit row on the board. Everyone else watches and counts the pictures aloud after each row.
In your maths copy, write which you find easiest to read: tally, pictures or towers.
Tally: Apple 4, Banana 6, Orange 3.
Build the three towers.
