    1 - Start ~5 mins

    Today you will

    • learn four safety words: data protection, virus, malware and spam
    • see the four ways trouble usually gets onto a device
    • add the four words to your glossary, with examples

    Warm-up

A free game installer also puts something on your computer that you never agreed to. Is that spam, a virus, other malware or a data protection problem?

    2 - Key Concepts ~8 mins

Data protection (GDPR) is the rules for how personal data, like your name or photo, is kept and shared.

Malware is any software built to harm, spy on or lock a device.

A virus is one kind of malware that copies itself into other files.

Spam is unwanted messages sent to lots of people at once, like a "You have won a Leap Card top-up" email.

    Four ways in

Threats get in through an attachment, a download, a bad web page or a shared device.

    3 - Sort the Threat ~14 mins

    Sort the threats

Now you will use your four new words on some real-life examples. Work together as a class and follow the box below.

    4 - Common Issues ~4 mins

    Common mix-ups

    • Calling everything a virus. Ask what it does. A virus copies itself into other files. Anything else harmful is other malware.
    • Mixing up spam and scams. Spam means unwanted bulk messages. Some spam is also a scam.
    • Unsure what personal data is. If it can identify a living person, like a name or a photo of a face, it is personal data.

    5 - Glossary Build ~20 mins

    Independent Practice

Your goal: Add four entries to your glossary.
    Time: ~20 minutes
Task: Watch your teacher write the spam entry first. Then open {{code:sm4_digital_literacy_glossary}} in {{code:Project_Portfolio/09_specialism/sm4/}}, or make a document with that name there, and add your entries using these starters.

Data protection (GDPR): Rules that… Example:…

Virus: Malware that spreads by… Example:…

Malware: The wider family of… Example:…

Spam: Unwanted bulk messages that… Example:…

    Success criteria:
    • All four words have a definition and one example.
    • My virus entry calls it a kind of malware.
