A new 5th class will walk into this room next September. We are going to design a welcome poster for them.
Look at these two posters. One feels balanced and settled; the other feels a bit off. What is different about the way the shapes are arranged?
Take three hands-up answers on what makes the balanced poster feel balanced. Steer toward the shapes turn around a middle point and the empty space is spread evenly without naming rotational symmetry yet — that lands in a later step.
Here is the first idea designers use: measuring how much of the page a shape covers.
On screen is a title box that is 6 cm by 5 cm, shown on a 100-square page. How many squares does that box cover? What share of the page is that?
Point to the 6 cm by 5 cm title box shown on screen. Ask the class how many squares it covers (30), then ask what share of a 100-square page that is (30%). Draw out that on a 100-square page, the number of squares a shape covers IS its percentage.
The second idea is rotational symmetry.
On the plan on screen, the same corner shape is drawn once in each of the four corners, each turned a quarter turn around the centre.
The third idea is a tessellating border: copies of a shape fitting edge to edge with no gaps and no overlaps.
Build the order-4 idea live on the board so pupils watch it happen, do not just tell them. Draw one corner shape, then draw the same shape rotated a quarter turn into the next corner, and so on until all four corners match. Ask how many times does it look the same in one full turn? before saying four.
Then sketch a short border strip: triangles fitting edge to edge with no gaps, and contrast it with a pentagon that leaves a gap so pupils see what tessellating means. Hold out for pupils to name the order-4 idea themselves.
Let's work this out together on the board. Our poster page is a 10 by 10 grid, so the whole page is 100 squares.

This chart could go on our poster. If you drew it on your grid as a box 5 squares wide and 5 squares tall, how many of our 100 squares would it fill?
Talk this one through together — pupils take turns at the board and the class agrees or corrects out loud.
Before each bar shows, ask the class to predict its height. Then move to the poster question: a chart drawn as a 5-square by 5-square box covers 5 × 5 = 25 of our 100 squares, so it takes a quarter of the page. Revoice any pupil who links the box size to how much room it needs on the page.
Let's bring one more chart up on the board together. This one compares two possible 5th classes, 5A and 5B.
A chart like this could be one element on your poster. If you drew it on your grid as a box 6 squares wide and 5 squares tall, how many of your 100 squares would it fill?
Drive this interactive on the IWB; pupils call out each move and explain their thinking. Keep the focus on the poster question: a chart drawn as a 6-square by 5-square box covers 6 × 5 = 30 of the 100 squares, so it takes almost a third of the page. That leaves 70 squares for the title box, corner shapes and border, which feeds straight into the layout decisions they make next.
