Here is a list of four points: (1, 1), (4, 1), (4, 3), (1, 3).
If you plotted all four and joined them up, what shape do you think you would get?
Take two or three hands-up guesses, no working yet — just the prediction. Most will say rectangle or square. Hold the answer: we'll plot it and find out.
Each shape is drawn by plotting every vertex first, then joining the points in the order listed, with the last point going back to the first so the shape closes. The same rule builds a rectangle, a triangle, a pentagon, a shape that uses negative co-ordinates, and one surprise at the end. That last one has the same points as a square, but a different result.
Rectangle — confirm their prediction from the hook, then trace the outline once with a finger so they see the last point joins back to the first.
Triangle — three points, three sides; ask why there's no fourth join to make.
Pentagon — count the five sides aloud together; the rule works for any number of vertices.
Four-quadrant grid — the bridge to the challenge. Read a negative co-ordinate aloud: (−3, −2) means three left, then two down. Insist on across first, then up or down (left for negative x, down for negative y) so they meet negatives here before the Class Challenge.
Bow-tie — the key one. Same four corners as a square, but joining (0, 0) to (3, 3) makes the lines cross. Ask: which two corners got joined that shouldn't have? Sets up the Maths Talk.
Now we plot this kite together, point by point: (3, 1), then (5, 4), then (3, 6), then (1, 4). Always go across first, then up. We plot all four first, then join them in that order and back to the start. Before you join the last line to close it, say what shape you think it will be.
Talk this one through together — pupils take turns at the board and the class agrees or corrects out loud.
Call each co-ordinate; a pupil taps the square before joining anything. Insist on "across first, then up" for every point — that is where the slips happen. Once all four are plotted, pause before the final join and ask the class to predict the shape, then join it closed. Revoice a good answer: so (3, 1) is the bottom point, and it joins up to (5, 4) on the right.
In your maths copy, sketch a first-quadrant grid. Plot the kite we drew together: (3, 1), (5, 4), (3, 6), (1, 4), going across first, then up. Join the points in that order and back to the start, then write kite underneath.
Walk the room glancing at the axis numbering and whether points are joined in the listed order — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. Watch for pupils who plot up-then-across instead of across-then-up.

This is the practice round — pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
For the first three, pupils plot every point before joining. On the last one, the whole class predicts the joining order before anyone taps — that is the bow-tie idea from Watch and Notice made into a challenge. If a pupil produces a crossed shape, don't correct it yourself; ask the class which two corners got joined that shouldn't have.
