1 - Introduction ~5 mins
Today you will
- cut your format 1 so it is at least 10% shorter
- check every word for mistakes
- save the tighter copy as v3
Format 1 is the main piece you made for your VET interview, like slides or a short video.
Warm-up
Think of a talk or video that lost your attention halfway through. Was it too long, or did it keep repeating itself?
2 - Key Concepts ~5 mins
A first-pass edit means reading your whole piece, cutting what is not needed and fixing mistakes.
The 10% rule means cutting at least a tenth, so 10 slides become 9 or fewer.
Proofing means checking spelling, names and euro amounts, like fixing "€45O" where a letter O is used instead of a zero.
Honest feedback means telling a partner one strength and one thing to cut.
Example
Aoife cut her GAA sock pitch from 12 slides to 9. She merged her two "About me" slides and fixed the names.
3 - Step-by-step Task ~15 mins
You will practise a first edit on a small deck of six slides. Build it from the text in the box below, mistakes and all, then follow the steps in the box below that.
If your format 1 is a video, audio or infographic, your teacher will show you how to practise on a copy called {{code:sm2_edit_practice_YourName}}.

4 - Common Issues ~3 mins
Common snags
- If your slide count barely changed, cut whole slides or clips, not just a few words.
- If spell-check missed things, read your piece out loud and check the names and euro amounts yourself.
- If the Delete key does nothing, right-click the slide thumbnail and choose Delete slide.
5 - Independent Practice ~24 mins
Independent Practice
- Open your format 1 file ending in {{code:_v2}} in {{code:09_specialism/sm2/}}. Write down its length first.
- Cut whole slides, clips or blocks until it is 10% shorter.
- Shorten long lines. Then check spelling, names, dates and euro amounts.
- Save it in {{code:sm2/}} as {{code:sm2_vet_presentation_v3}}, {{code:sm2_vet_video_v3}}, {{code:sm2_vet_audio_v3}} or {{code:sm2_vet_infographic_v3}}.
- Ask a partner for one strength and one cut.
If you have no v2 yet, save your practice deck as {{code:sm2_edit_practice_v3}} instead.
