Ethical and Legal Debates

Explore digital ethics through a class debate on topics like creative rights and AI. Review key concepts, participate in opinion line activities to select a question, and write a note summarising positions and your view with evidence.

    1 - Introduction ~5 mins

    Today you will

    • help the class pick one digital ethics question
    • take a stand and back it up with evidence
    • write an Ethics Debate Note in {{code:sm4}}

    Warm-up

Think of something people argue about online, like using a photo without credit or a deepfake (a computer-made fake video) of a famous person. Which side would you take, and what one fact would you use?

    2 - Key Concepts ~6 mins

You will use these four ideas in today's debate.

    • Reasoned position: a clear stand you can explain, not just a gut feeling.
    • Evidence: a fact, a law, a licence or a real case that backs up your point.
    • Fair summary: saying what both sides think in words each side would agree with.
    • Deepfake: a fake video or picture of a real person, made by a computer.

    Example

"I am against AI using Irish musicians' songs without paying them, because they lose control of their work."

3 - Opinion Line: Digital Ethics ~15 mins

    There is no right answer.

    Key point

After the second statement, the class picks one debate question. Write down the exact words from the board, because you will use them in your Ethics Debate Note later.

    Opinion Line

    4 - Common Issues ~3 mins

    Common issues

    • I only have a feeling. Finish the sentence "I believe ... because ...". The "because" must be a fact, a law, a licence or a real case.
    • I can't think of any evidence. Use the evidence bank on the board, or a source from {{code:sm4_references}}.
    • I changed my mind. That's fine. In your note, say what you thought first and what changed your mind.

    5 - Independent Practice ~25 mins

    Independent Practice

Your goal: Write up today's class debate in an Ethics Debate Note.
    Time: ~25 minutes
    Task:
    1. Open {{code:Project_Portfolio}}, then {{code:09_specialism/sm4/}}.
    2. Make a new document called {{code:sm4_ethics_debate_note}}.
    3. Type the headings and sentence starters from the box below.
    4. Finish each sentence. Use the exact question from the board.
    5. Link at least one sentence to your Something Real project or the media you use in it.

    Debate topic
    The class question is…

    Position A
    Supporters argue… because…

    Position B
    Supporters argue… because…

    My reasoned view
    I support… The evidence I am using is…

    Link
This links to my Something Real work when…

If you get stuck, look back at the Common issues step.

    Success criteria:
    • My note uses the exact question from the board.
    • Both sides are written fairly.
    • My view has at least one piece of evidence.
    • {{code:sm4_ethics_debate_note}} is saved in {{code:09_specialism/sm4/}}.
