Look at this little house on the board. Inside it live three numbers: 5, 2 and 7.
These three numbers will make adds and take-aways together. What number sentences do you think they make?
A fact family is two parts and one whole that make four number sentences: two adds and two take-aways.
Watch each family on the board. The parts can swap, so we get two adds. Each part can come off the whole, so we get two take-aways. Same three numbers, four sentences.
The biggest number is the whole. When we take away, we write the whole first.
These number sentences need to go home. Help them find the right house: the 4, 2, 6 house or the 5, 3, 8 house.
Before each sentence lands, say the family out loud.
In your maths copy, write the four facts for the 5, 2 and 7 family.
Write two adds and two take-aways. Remember: the biggest number goes first when we take away. You know this family now.
Two houses now. For each one, put every sentence that belongs inside, and spot the odd ones out.
Before you check, name the whole: the biggest number, written first when we take away.
