1 - One-sentence Forecast ~5 mins
Give today's forecast in English in one sentence. Include the weather and a temperature if you can.
You already know numbers from earlier. Today you join weather and temperature into one short German forecast, the way a board in München might show it.
By the time you pack up, you will be able to say a short German forecast with a temperature in it, and you will have looked at what forecasts in hot places and wet places choose to talk about.
2 - Eight Weather Words ~10 mins
Here are today's eight weather words. Tap each one, listen, then say it back together.
You will build every forecast today from one of these two sentence patterns, and no others:
- Pattern A — Heute ist es sonnig und achtzehn Grad (HOY-teh ist es ZON-ikh oont ACHT-tsayn graht) — Today it is sunny and eighteen degrees.
- Pattern B — Heute gibt es Regen und fünf Grad (HOY-teh gibt es RAY-gen oont fuenf graht) — Today there is rain and five degrees.
Grad (graht) means degrees. After gibt es in Pattern B you can drop in Sonne, Regen, Schnee, Wind, Sturm or Nebel. sonnig is the one word that goes after ist es in Pattern A. die Wolke is for the matching game and the map today, not for your forecast sentence.
Two things worth spotting as you listen:
- German nouns keep a capital letter, so it is die Sonne (the sun) and der Regen (the rain), never sonne. The capital is part of spelling the word right.
- A weather word on its own is only a label. Join it to a number with Grad and you have a real forecast you can say out loud: Heute gibt es Schnee und null Grad (Today there is snow and zero degrees).
3 - Weather Pairs ~10 mins
Flip two cards at a time and find each German weather word with its English meaning. Say the full German (with its article if it is a noun) quietly as you turn each card.
4 - Into Your Copy ~3 mins
Open your copy. Keep an eye on the gapped model on the board while you write:
Heute ist es ______ und ______ Grad
or
Heute gibt es ______ und ______ Grad
Word bank (only these): sonnig · Sonne · Regen · Schnee · Wind · Sturm · Nebel
Write one full forecast sentence, including a temperature number and Grad. Use the ist es pattern only with sonnig; use the gibt es pattern with the other bank words.
5 - Label the Weather Map ~10 mins
Look at the weather map (think of a simple board for München) and click the correct German label for each symbol. Use today's words exactly as they appear on the word-table.
