    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedThree ways to make a half on the board: a pizza to share, a strip to fold, and a group of counters to deal. Look carefully. What is the same about all three?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~8 mins

Three pictures of halves. Watch what stays the same every time: the two parts match.

Now both parts are shaded. What has the pizza become again?

One more fair half. Do the two parts still match?

    3 - Try It Together ~8 mins

Look at these paper bars under the whole bar. They are fraction strips.

Shade one half of the halves strip.

Now shade both halves. Does the strip match the whole bar above it?

Last look: only one half is shaded. Is this strip whole yet, or is something still missing?

    Two halves make one whole

    4 - Draw and Shade a Half ~3 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

In your maths copy, draw a shape cut into two equal halves and shade one half.

    5 - Class Challenge ~12 mins

We are sorting halves and not-halves on the board. Thumbs ready: half, or not a half?
