1 - Three Things in Your Bedroom ~5 mins

Illustration for Three things in your bedroomName three things in your bedroom. Keep them in your head for a moment.

Today those ordinary objects get German names as we walk through a Wohnung (flat) you might find in Hamburg, and we close the year by looking at everything you can now do in German that you could not do in September.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Name eight pieces of furniture in German, each with der, die or das
    • Say which room each one belongs in, using German room names
    • Look back at a full year of German and name one thing you are proud of

2 - Eight Pieces of Furniture ~10 mins

We are walking through a Wohnung in Hamburg: eight things you might find inside. English and the picture show first. Listen to the audio, then say the full German phrase together (article plus noun). We will meet them in two sets of four before running all eight.

3 - Spin and Say It ~10 mins

First, learn four room words for our Hamburg Wohnung from the board bank and say them together.

    Room bank:

    • das Schlafzimmer (dass SHLAHF-tsim-er) – bedroom
    • das Wohnzimmer (dass VOHN-tsim-er) – living room
    • die Küche (dee KUE-shuh) – kitchen
    • das Badezimmer (dass BAH-duh-tsim-er) – bathroom
    Key point

Then the wheel lands on a furniture picture. Your teacher picks a pupil; that pupil says the full German phrase (article + word) and names a room it belongs in from the bank. The class repeats. Example: der Tisch, die Küche.

    4 - Into Your Copy ~3 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

We are still inside our Hamburg Wohnung. Open your copy and write four furniture phrases with der, die or das. Beside each, copy the German room from the bank on the board.

    Furniture bank (keep on screen):

    • der Tisch – the table
    • der Stuhl – the chair
    • das Bett – the bed
    • der Kleiderschrank – the wardrobe
    • das Sofa – the sofa
    • die Lampe – the lamp
    • der Teppich – the rug
    • das Bücherregal – the bookshelf

    Room bank (keep on screen):

    • das Schlafzimmer (dass SHLAHF-tsim-er) – bedroom
    • das Wohnzimmer (dass VOHN-tsim-er) – living room
    • die Küche (dee KUE-shuh) – kitchen
    • das Badezimmer (dass BAH-duh-tsim-er) – bathroom

Model line: der Stuhl : das Wohnzimmer

Write furniture in German with its article; write the room in German from the bank. Take care with capitals, and with the ü in die Küche and das Bücherregal.

    5 - Furniture Bingo ~10 mins

You have a bingo grid of today's furniture from our Hamburg Wohnung. Listen for the German phrase (article and all) and cross it off. First full line calls Bingo!
