How Long Does It Take: Comparing Time

This maths lesson focuses on distinguishing between events that take a moment and those that take a long time. Pupils will sort activities accordingly and then order them from the shortest to the longest duration.

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedQuick votes. Which takes longer: blinking your eyes, or sleeping all night? Clapping once, or a whole PE lesson?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~7 mins

Some things take just a moment. Some take a long time. Watch how we sort them first, then how three everyday events line up from shortest to longest.

Watch this last pair carefully. A clap is over at once. A PE warm-up can feel quick, but it lasts many claps, so it takes longer.

    3 - Try It Together ~7 mins

Today we sort together. Is each event a moment or a long time? A clap, a blink, tying a shoelace, a PE lesson, and sleeping all night. Put each card where it belongs.

    4 - Write a Moment and a Long Time ~2 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

In your maths copy, write one thing that takes a moment and one thing that takes a long time.

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

Today we work through these together: a clap and a night's sleep; brushing teeth, eating dinner and sleeping; four school-day events; then five events from quickest to longest.
