Warm-up
A boss has thirty seconds to look at your chart. Should it show a change over time, a comparison, or a share of a total?
A column or line chart shows change over time, like sales each week.
A pie chart shows how a total is split, like where your money went.
You need two different chart types, not two of the same.
An interpretation is a short note under a chart. It names the trend, the biggest value, the smallest value and one decision.
Revenue rises over six weeks. Week 6 is biggest at €330 and week 3 is smallest at €120. Decision: order extra stock for the last market.
You will make a practice workbook for a small market stall, with a column chart and a pie chart. Your teacher makes the first chart live. Then you make the pie chart and the PDF. Follow the steps in the box below, and copy the tables and notes from these boxes.

Model note 1 (column chart): Revenue rises overall across the six weeks. The biggest week is week 6 at €330. The smallest is week 3 at €120. Decision: order extra cases for the final market weekend and check what slowed week 3.
Model note 2 (pie chart): Materials dominate the costs at €420. Marketing is the smallest cost at €45. Stall fees and travel together are still smaller than materials alone. Decision: negotiate bulk materials pricing before the next market block.
Common issues
- The chart shows the wrong columns. Delete it, select only the columns you need, and try again.
- Both charts are the same type. Change one of them to a pie chart.
- My note only talks about colours. Use the four parts: trend, biggest, smallest and one decision.
- The PDF cuts off the chart. Switch to Landscape and fit it to one page.
Key Assignment 2: your chart workbook
- In {{code:sm3}}, make a workbook called {{code:sm3_ka2_chart_workbook}}.
- Copy in your numbers from {{code:sm3_ka1_problem_solver}}.
- Make two different charts, each with a title.
- Under each chart, write a note with the trend, biggest, smallest and a decision.
- Save as {{code:sm3_ka2_charts.pdf}}, upload it to {{code:sm3}}, then show your teacher.
