Think about every sign, label and notice you passed on the way into this room. Which language was each one written in? Was it Irish, English, or both side by side?
Watch the three classroom-word cards on the board. Listen to each language. Join in out loud for English, Irish and the one extra language your teacher chooses. For the others, just listen and notice if any sound a bit like English.
Four short clips will play. Listen twice before anyone answers. The languages you might hear are:
After the second listen, point to the language on the board or raise your hand when your teacher names it. Trust your ear, not a lucky guess.
Open your copy. Write the word for book in two languages, and draw a small picture of a book beside them.
Choose any two of those three. Then on the next line write one form you remember for pencil or bag (any language you heard is fine) and a tiny sketch beside it.
Look at the word table on the board. We will open one row at a time. Your job is a hunt: which words look like a family, and which word looks nothing like the others?
