A bun tray holds ten. Eight buns sit in the tray and five wait on the plate. How could we make the tray easy to count at a glance?
Our bun tray is a ten-frame: ten spaces ready to fill. Filling the empty tray spaces is the same move as filling the frame.
When a total goes past ten, the frame is not enough on its own. First look at the starting number on the frame. Count the empty spaces: that is how many we still need to fill the ten. Then read the leftover as ten and some more.
9 + 3: how many empty spaces to fill the ten?
8 + 5: how many empty spaces to fill the ten?
7 + 4: how many empty spaces to fill the ten?
One pupil builds on the board. We all watch and say ten and ___ together.
Fill the ten first, then read the leftover. We will try 9 + 4, then 8 + 6, then 7 + 6, then 5 + 8.
In your maths copy, write these carefully:
The pupil at the board fills the ten first. We all say ten and ___ together, then we agree the total.
We will try 9 + 2, then 8 + 4, then 7 + 5.
